Vision problems in people with cognitive and developmental disabilities are 65 times more common than in the general population, making it difficult for them to develop independence and daily skills for their benefit and benefit of their families (Salt A and Sargent J, 2014).Also populations with autism have high incidences of eye and vision problems (Scharre & Creedon 1992, Goldberg 2002). Despite the importance of vision for people with cognitive and developmental disabilities, there are no suitable vision tests available in Israel. In a preliminary study which we conducted, we found 90% of the children with disabilities had never been examined by an ophthalmologist or an optometrist specialized in this sphere. The study data as well as our experience in vision and rehabilitation indicate that this special population “falls between the cracks”and they are neither examined nor treated and therefore have inadequate vision. This impairs both their independence and their daily functioning.
